Of everything I have built for this site, the photos page is the part I fussed over most. Click a photo and it flies into place. Tap an arrow key and the next one glides in. I spent an unreasonable number of evenings on details most people will never consciously notice because that is exactly the kind of work I love.
Then it occurred to me that none of it had to stay here! The shadcn registry has a model I find genuinely appealing: instead of installing a dependency, you run one command and the source code lands in your project. That felt like the right home for this work. I extracted the viewer from the site, gave it a name, and released it.
It’s called DKMediaViewer, and the DK prefix is of course an homage to NeXTSTEP’s NS prefixes. There’s a live demo you can click around in, the source is on GitHub, and it’s on npm too. If you have photos and videos of your own, I would love for them to feel this good.
